KID-APPROVED KENTUCKY DAY TRIP #1 – Blazing your own trail – above ground and below!
What did our Adventure Ambassadors Alyce and NaCari say? “The world’s longest underground swinging bridge? A muddy wild off-trail tour? Parks and cell phones? YES!!”
Stop #1 – Interactive exhibits at the American Cave Museum (119 East Main Street, Horse Cave) set the stage for the cave tour and showcase the animals that live around and in the cave. The museum is totally FREE!

Stop#2 – Wow! Hidden River Cave has the largest entrance to a cave in the entire Kentucky cave area and is right on (and under) the streets of downtown Horse Cave! Our Ambassadors took a 1-hour guided tour and heard the history of the cave that was once the most polluted in the world. Along the banks of a subterranean river, they learned about the cave’s cool history, geology, and the unique creatures that live there now. Should they go even deeper? YES AGAIN!!!

Stop #3 – The 2-hour OFF-TRAIL CAVE ADVENTURE TOUR was perfect! The daring experience took them off the regular trail and showed them to wild side of the cave- mud and all!!! With helmets and headlamps, the guide led them as they crawled and climbed as they explored the geology and ecology up-close. (Advance reservations required for this Off-Trail Tour)
Stop #4 – Who knew that you could trace the path of the cave underneath your feet in downtown Horse Cave? The pebbly aggregate portion of the sidewalk marks the path. And along that path is the Horse Cave Stories Cell Phone Tour. You can actually hear the stories of a town that grew on top of the cave in the voices of local people. Sweet!

Stop #5 – Don’t forget to take a little time to relax in the Maple Avenue Park that’s just behind the cave. There’s a walking trail and benches for parents who can’t keep up with you, a shelter for a picnic, and a fun playground!

Overnight ideas? For our adventurers, we suggest a Conestoga wagon at Horse Cave KOA (489 Flint Ridge Road, Horse Cave) for a frontier-themed overnight. You can choose your favorite relaxation – pool, giant slide, mini-golf, and bouncing pillow. They also have treehouses, teepees, cabins, and rv sites to choose from.

Food nearby? Fuel up with Amish donuts, fry pies, baked goods, and meals at Farmwald’s Restaurant & Amish Bakery (3720 L&N Turnpike, Horse Cave) just across the road. You can even plan a cookout on your KOA patio or deck and watch the stars come out!
