KID-APPROVED BONUS DAY TRIP! A True Kentucky Adventure – Farm Fun & Presidential Parks!
A recommendation from our Adventure Ambassador Luke, “This is too much fun to be considered educational!!!”
Lay of the land – There are more than 20 miles of historic US 31E (also called Jackson Highway) through Hart County, and this day trip takes you some of Kentucky’s most beautiful farmland to the first stop at Dennison’s Roadside Market (5824 S Jackson Hwy, Horse Cave, KY) located just 5 miles outside downtown Horse Cave. They’re open seasonally April through October.
First stop is delicious – Kids love Dennison’s seasonal U-Pick Flowers and Pumpkins, front porch rockers, playground, picnic/party pavilion, greenhouse, locally grown fruit and veggies, local jams & jellies, crafts/gifts, bottled soft drinks from the cooler, homemade bread, cake, and cookies – all at a fun roadside market on a real Kentucky farm! Yes, please!

Stop #2 is worth the trip – Just about 25 miles along the beautiful rural road, you’ll enter Larue County and pass right by your next stop – the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park (2995 Lincoln Farm Road, Hodgenville ), another favorite of our Ambassadors. The symbolic birth cabin inside the beautiful memorial building at the top of a gorgeous stairway, the nature trails, and programs here are just part of the fun.

Stop #3 is full of fun – The Boyhood Home at Knob Creek (7120 Bardstown Road, Hodgenville) is the second unit of the National Historic Park. It is just a few miles away and their visitor center is also loaded with activities and fun!

Extra fun in downtown Hodgenville – On your way from the Birthplace to the Boyhood Home, we suggest you stop in downtown Hodgenville at the Lincoln Museum (66 Lincoln Square, Hodgenville) where you can walk through history and even try on a replica of Lincoln’s iconic stovepipe hat! And right out front, the statues of Lincoln as an adult and a boy are definite photo ops!

Hart County food stops on 31E along the way? Try Wigwam General Store open Mondays – Saturdays (7015 S Jackson Highway, Horse Cave),Pa Daddy’s BBQ open Thursdays and Fridays (5112 S Jackson Hwy, Horse Cave) or Green River Hill Grocery Thursdays – Saturdays (5685 N Jackson Highway, Munfordville). You can also pick up food at Dennison’s, and they often have food trucks there, too.
An overnight cabin experience to top off the visit? We suggest you stay the night back at Horse Cave KOA (489 Flint Ridge Road, Horse Cave) in a beautiful cabin, and enjoy the pool, playground, and outdoor fun! They also have Conestoga wagons, treehouses, teepees, and rv sites to choose from. We also have other lodging options to choose from at: https://kygetaway.com/attraction_category/stay/
