Hooked on Caves Itinerary
After your visit to the granddaddy of them all, Mammoth Cave National Park, you’ll want to check out some of the “show caves” in the area. While most people think if you’ve seen one cave you’ve seen them all, locals know that every cave has its own personality, just like your children.
So make plans for an intensive cave adventure!

We’re betting that your tour of beautiful Mammoth Onyx Cave at Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo. is the only place in the world you can tour a gorgeous cave and pet a kangaroo! Located just off I-65 exit 58, this cave is easy to find. The cave tour is about 30 minutes, but you’ll want to plan on at least a couple of hours so you can experience all the fun here.

Just two miles off I-65 Exit 58 on Main Street in historic downtown Horse Cave, you’ll find the ultimate caving adventures at Hidden River Cave. This cave is formed by a river, so it’s very different from the others. There are no stalactites or stalagmites here. Your walking tour takes you along the banks of a subterranean river. NEW- Every tour features the world’s longest underground suspension bridge and the largest cave dome room in the region.
Or if you’re feeling really adventurous, you can venture off trail on the Wild Cave Tour. (Reservations required for the Wild Cave Tour.) You can zip line across the mouth of the cave and rappel down the limestone face of the cave. Whew! (Reservations also required for zip and rappel.)
Above-ground cave fun? You can learn about caves in the area at the adjacent American Cave Museum and trace the cave beneath your feet along a sidewalk marked with the cave pathway on the award-winning Horse Cave Stories cell phone tour We suggest adding a stop at a local restaurant for great food and beverages as a reward for your day of adventure!

While you’re in our area, two must-see stops are R&J Grocery & Amish Bakery and Farmwald’s Dutch Bakery & Deli, two nearby Amish stores where you can get a homemade doughnut or a fresh-sliced sandwich and soft drink from the cooler to enjoy after you browse the merchandise.
