Amish Businesses are Highlighted in New Map Produced by Horse Cave/Hart County Tourism, Kentucky

August 2021 – Horse Cave/Hart County, Ky. – Often referred to as “the fastest growing Amish community in America,” the Amish community of Hart County is highlighted in a new map created by Horse Cave/Hart County Tourism. Of the 200 Amish families living in Hart County, several own businesses including bakeries, greenhouses, general merchandise stores and even a newly opened animal attraction. The map, which can be downloaded on KyGetaway.com, features nearly 20 businesses that might interest tourists.

Members of the old Order Amish faith began moving into the Hart County area in 1989. Since that time, the Amish population has grown to become the 8th-largest in North America. The Hart County Amish community includes 18 church districts on both the north and south sides of the Green River.

“First-time visitors to Hart County are usually surprised to see a horse-drawn buggy hitched to a post in downtown or slowly moving along one of the back roads,” says Horse Cave/Hart County Tourism Executive Director Sandra T. Wilson. “The Amish families have opened several businesses over the last three decades, including R&S Grocery and Amish Bakery, Hart County Produce Auction, Detweiler’s Country Store, Farmwald’s Dutch Bakery & Deli, and Dutch Country Safari Park. Through the map, Horse Cave/Hart County Tourism is happy to make the businesses more accessible to tourists.”

Amish businesses most often of interest to visitors include greenhouses, bakeries, window and lawn furniture manufacturers, meat processing, salvage grocery and general merchandise stores. Additionally, several families grow tomatoes and other vegetables to sell at roadside market stands. When visiting Amish businesses, please keep in mind:

They are closed on Sunday.
While the Amish community welcomes customers, they ask that you not photograph the residents.
It’s suggested to call ahead to confirm the business is open as they sometimes close for special occasions.
Most businesses take credit cards. However, it’s recommended to take along some cash as an ATM machine may not be located nearby.

Available in tear-off or brochure-folded styles, the maps are being distributed at the I-65 Hart County Tourist Info. Ctrs., Mammoth Cave National Park Traveler Info. Ctr. and local brochure racks.
